The Julia N. Visor Academic Center is a division of University College which exists to help students make successful transitions to Illinois State University, achieve their educational goals, and realize their academic potential in their first year and beyond. The Visor Center does this through specialized communities, programs, and services including facilitated study groups, writing assistance, learning workshops, and developmental and transitional courses.
The Visor Center offers one-on-one writing assistance on papers and written projects, helping students at any stage of the project for any course. Writing tutors work with individual students, and occasionally with small groups of students, providing help tailored to each student's needs, so they must be friendly, desire to be helpful, and must be able to communicate effectively. While the main responsibility is tutoring, there will be other tasks as assigned by graduate assistant supervisors and the Coordinator of Academic Support Services.
This application is for an applicant pool. Applications will be reviewed mid-semester when there is an increase in demand for a subject or should staffing changes occur.
Salary Rate / Pay Rate
$13.00 per hour
The ideal candidate will be a confident, proficient writer that is able to communicate with student writers clearly via the spoken and written word.
Demonstrated success in one or more writing-intensive courses is preferred.
Demonstrated success in multiple writing-intensive courses, and prior experience or attested potential working with students, are highly desired.
If applicable, students should highlight their aptitude in one or more writing or citation styles (e.g., APA, AP, MLA, Chicago, research writing, literary analysis, etc.), or their demonstrated experience working with students with particular needs (e.g. English language learners).

In addition, all appointments are contingent upon proof of eligibility for employment at Illinois State University to perform the required duties described above on your scheduled start date. The Immigration and Control Act of 1986, Public Law 99-603, requires all new employees to file an I-9 in person and no later than three days from the beginning of employment. This may be accomplished within the department or through Human Resources. Illinois State University student employees are restricted to no more than 28 hours per week of on-campus employment for all positions held.
