Job Summary

The Center for Civic Engagement coordinates multiple campus initiatives related to the University’s core values of community and civic engagement. This position supports one administrative professional position, four civil service positions, and two graduate assistants, as well as serving as the first contact for faculty, staff, students, and members of the community that utilize the Center. The position is integral to the efficient operation of the Center, answering all inquiries at the reception desk; overseeing record keeping, office supply ordering, and inventory; and providing support for administration of the Civic Engagement and Social Change minor, while supporting staff and supervising front desk student staff.

The vision of the Center for Civic Engagement (CCE) is “A more just and equitable world co-created through civic learning, democratic participation, and collective action.” Its mission is to inspire Redbirds to explore their values, learn about community issues, develop civic skills and agency, and act to make the world a better place. In general, CCE is responsible for enacting Illinois State’s commitment to community and civic engagement and fostering a culture that values and rewards civic engagement. This is accomplished through a variety of programs and services with students, faculty, and staff, and in partnership with Bloomington-Normal community organizations. CCE’s work involves volunteering and service-learning, political engagement, and civic education.

Salary Rate / Pay Rate

$20.12 per hour

Required Qualifications

  1. High school graduation or equivalent
  2. Twenty-four (24) months of work experience comparable to the third level of this series. This work includes performing a wide variety of office support tasks, which require the use of judgment and initiative and the ability to operate computer systems, using word processing, database, and software packages. Knowledge of the organization, programs, practices, and procedures of a department/unit is central to the performance of the duties.

Preferred Qualifications

  1. Experience supervising students or other employees
  2. Excellent communication skills
  3. Strong organizational skills, attention to detail, and the ability to collaborate
  4. Ability to use good judgment, operate computer systems, using word processing, database and software packages, and to exercise discretion in handling sensitive and confidential information.

Work Hours

Varies; usually 9:00am-4:30pm three days per week

Functional Expectations

Must be able to complete the following with or without a reasonable accommodation:

  1. Effectively communicate on a daily basis.
  2. Remain at a workstation for extended periods.
  3. Move about in various locations on and off campus as needed to complete day-to-day work.

The Civil Service examination for this classification is based on your application materials and responses to the supplemental questions. No participation other than submission of applicant materials is required from applicants that qualify to take the exam. If you meet the minimum required qualifications for this position, you will receive a score calculated based on your education and experience, and your name will be placed on the active employment register by exam score. After the application deadline, the names within the top three scores will be referred to the department for interview.
