Job Summary

The Department of Health Sciences (HSC) invites applications for a nine-month, tenure-track position of Assistant/Associate Professor in Health Informatics and Management in the CAHIIM-accredited Health Information Management program, titled Health Informatics and Management, beginning August 16, 2027. We seek candidates who are highly qualified and motivated to teach foundational courses in health information management and health informatics, to develop a research program, and to engage in service activities that support the department, college, university, and profession.

A successful candidate will be expected to pursue cross-functional, integrative curriculum development and to incorporate a pedagogical approach that involves students in authentic experiential learning. Candidates will be expected to teach courses such as data analytics, revenue cycle management, healthcare law, healthcare quality, healthcare finance, health information systems, and other courses to support the Department of Health Sciences. Candidates will be expected to develop a focused area of research, including publication in referred journals, and provide service to the campus and professional communities. For consideration at the associate level, applicants should have an appropriate record of teaching excellence and scholarship.

The position is a nine-month, tenure track appointment with the possibility of summer teaching. Salary and rank are commensurate with qualifications and experience. The locus of annual evaluation, tenure, and promotion in rank will be in the Department of Health Sciences.

The Department of Health Sciences (HSC) is one of six departments and two schools in the College of Applied Science and Technology (www.cast.illinoisstate.edu). There are 17 tenure and non-tenure track faculty members, a full-time academic advisor, a student success coordinator, and one civil service support staff in the department. The Department of Health Sciences has an on-line Master of Public Health (MPH) Degree that was started in Fall 2023. The Department houses the Central Illinois Area Health Education Center (AHEC). The HSC faculty and staff are committed to student-centered departmental and programmatic excellence.

The Health Informatics and Management program (with approximately 80 undergraduate majors), previously titled the Medical Record Administration Program, graduated its first class in 1973. The program is committed to providing extraordinary learning opportunities that prepare graduates to be in-demand professionals in health information management and informatics settings. The Health Informatics and Management Program now has three sequences: Health Informatics, Healthcare Leadership, and RHIT to HIM. The Health Informatics and Healthcare Leadership sequences are traditional on-campus programs. The RHIT to HIM fully online program is designed for individuals who already hold the RHIT credential who want to further their education by obtaining a bachelor’s degree. All program sequences are accredited by The Commission on Accreditation for Health Informatics & Information Management Education (CAHIIM). All sequences complete a professional practice experience before graduating, with the in-person sequences completing a junior and senior year professional practice experience. Upon graduation, students in the program are eligible to take the RHIA certification exam.

Salary Rate / Pay Rate

Assistant Professor $75,000-$82,000 commensurate with qualifications and experience. Associate Professor $85,000-$93,000 commensurate with qualifications and experience.

Required Qualifications

Applicants must have at least a master’s degree plus 30 doctoral credit hours completed by May 12, 2028, with at least one degree in health information management, health informatics, or a commensurate field, and the RHIA (Registered Health Information Management Administrator) certification. Candidates must be able to demonstrate oral proficiency in the English language as a requirement for this position, as mandated by state law.
