Job Summary
This position is an integral part of our dining operations staff. Led by experienced culinary professionals, we offer staff the opportunity to work in newly-renovated facilities and are committed to using quality ingredients and processes. This position plays an integral role in accomplishing this goal by utilizing a broad range of culinary skills and equipment to prepare fresh and delicious menu items. Our culinary staff frequently participates in display cooking, utilizing woks, salad preparation, grilling, and pizza making to enhance our customers' experience.

Salary Rate / Pay Rate
$17.66 per hour
Required Qualifications
1. High school diploma or equivalent.
2. One (1) year (12 months) of work experience in quantity cooking; preparing food by various methods with a full variety of menu items from standardized and portion size recipes, dietary manuals, oral or written instructions and cycle menus including preparing modified diets.
Preferred Qualifications
1. Full knowledge and acceptance of principles of diversity.
2. Knowledge of food values and nutrition; knowledge of materials and methods used in preparation of food on a large scale.
3. Knowledge of safety and sanitation principles.
4. Knowledge of the use and care of utensils and equipment.
5. Good communication skills; ability to follow oral and written instructions and work independently.
6. Excellent interpersonal skills, flexibility, and the ability to produce results working as part of a team or committee.
7. Ability to work with and supervise other kitchen employees; ability to train and instruct student employees; good customer service skills.
Work Hours
Shift and days off will vary, up to 28 hours per week.

This position requires standing, walking, use of fingers and hands, reaching, lifting, kneeling, stooping, crouching, speaking, seeing, hearing, tasting, and smelling. It also requires the ability to stand for an extended period of time without a significant rest period. Ability to lift 25 lbs frequently and up to 50 lbs occasionally.

Extra Help employees may only work up to 28 hours per week for all University employment. Employees are only paid for hours worked and do not qualify for most benefits including health insurance and retirement, with Illinois State University. However, Extra Help employees are eligible to participate in the University’s supplemental retirement savings plans (403b). Applicable retirement information is provided at the time of hire. There is no guarantee that working as Extra Help will lead to or secure permanent employment. In addition, extra help employees may only work up to 900 hours total during their employment.
