Job Summary
The Director of Health Promotion & Wellness provides visionary, strategic, and operational leadership for a comprehensive, campus-wide health promotion and well-being enterprise at Illinois State University. Reporting to the Executive Director for Well-being and Recreation, the Director serves as the subject-matter expert, advising on advancing system-level changes and embedding well-being into institutional structures that align with university priorities for student success, employee thriving, and inclusive excellence.
The Director leads the design, implementation, and evaluation of innovative, evidence-informed programs, policies, and initiatives that address individual, community, and environmental determinants of health. This role emphasizes cross-divisional collaboration, data-informed decision making, and sustainable impact at scale, positioning Illinois State University as a health promoting institution.
Salary Rate / Pay Rate
$99,000 - $105,000 annually

Required Qualifications
1. Master's degree in health education, exercise science, public health, nutrition, or related field.
2. Minimum of five years of progressively responsible experience in health promotion, wellness, or public health within higher education or a comparable organizational setting.
3. Demonstrated experience leading strategic planning, organizational change, and cross-functional collaboration.
4. Demonstrated experience in assessment, data analysis, and reporting.
5. Minimum of three years of experience supervising professional staff.
Preferred Qualifications
1. Certified Health Education Specialist (CHES) and/or Certified Wellness Program Manager/Consultant
2. Experience with systems-thinking approaches, population health frameworks, or health-promoting campus initiatives.
3. Teaching, training, or facilitation experience in academic or professional settings.
Work Hours
Office hours are Monday-Friday, 8:00am - 4:30 pm, with occasional weekend and evening hours as business needs dictate.
Functional Expectations
Must be able to complete the following with or without a reasonable accommodation:

2. Move about in various locations on and off campus as needed to complete day-to-day work
3. Effectively communicate on a daily basis
