Job Summary
The Gallery Assistant collaborates closely with the full-time staff on exhibition preparatory work and assists with installing artworks. The Gallery Assistant participates in visitor engagement; assists with public events, which may include after-hours or off-site events; and assists with University Galleries’ website and online calendars. The Gallery Assistant may also produce exhibition documentation, research artworks in the permanent collection, and maintain image archives.

University Galleries’ mission is to foster a greater understanding of art in our university and community, while providing support for artists at pivotal points in their careers. University Galleries is a public facility that is open seven days per week. All exhibitions and events are free. Our staff works closely with Illinois State University students, faculty, and staff; exhibiting artists; and regional K-12 schools and community organizations.

Salary Rate / Pay Rate
$30.00 - $35.00 per hour
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree (art, art history, art education, creative technologies, or a related field preferred)
- One to two years of experience working in an art gallery or museum
- General knowledge of contemporary art and art history
- Ability to work collaboratively with diverse groups of people
- Ability to handle works of art, including storage, packing, and general installation techniques
- Proficiency with Adobe Creative Suite, Microsoft Office, and Mac operating systems

Functional Expectations
Must be able to complete the following with or without reasonable accommodations:
- Effectively communicate on a daily basis.
- Lift or move up to 30 pounds in order to move art, move walls to facilitate art installation, load materials for off-site programming, and move boxes containing publications and brochures.
- Maneuver around facility to check for proper conditions and placements.
- Use a variety of ladders and a motorized lift.

Special Instructions for Applicants
Extra Help employees may only work up to 28 hours per week for all University employment. Employees are only paid for hours worked and do not qualify for most benefits including health insurance and retirement, with Illinois State University. However, Extra Help employees are eligible to participate in the University’s supplemental retirement savings plans (403b). Applicable retirement information is provided at the time of hire. There is no guarantee that working as Extra Help will lead to or secure permanent employment. In addition, extra help employees may only work up to 900 hours total during their employment.
