Job Summary
This is a part-time, temporary position meant to bridge a gap in staffing.
This position serves as the costume shop director for the School of Theatre, Dance, and Film production season, maintaining shop facilities, equipment, and costume stock.
Typical duties include:
- Production Instructional Support: Responsible for costume development for a large and complex production schedule. Develop and manage multiple strategic project plans to ensure costumes for all productions meet the needs of the School relative to both artistic and operational expectations.
- Costume Shop Operational/Production Support: Ensure adequate resources are available to support the student instructional environment and the summer professional environment. Develop, assess, and as appropriate modify costume shop process/procedure and workflow (including inventory control) to enhance production effectiveness/efficiency and to ensure optimal instructional opportunities for students.
- Fiscal and Personnel Management: Manage business and administrative functions of the costume shop.
- Other duties as assigned

Salary Rate / Pay Rate
$30.00 - $35.00 per hour
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor's or equivalent degree in theatre with emphasis in costume design and/or technology or related field.
- Adequate knowledge of theatrical design, costume design, and construction, as well as budget, personnel, and materials management experience.
Preferred Qualifications
- Master of Fine Arts degree in Costume Technology and/or professional costume shop supervisory experience.
Work Hours
TBD based on need; 28 or less hours per week, typically between the hours of 8:00am and 4:30pm Monday through Friday; occasional weekend and evening hours as business needs dictate
Functional Expectations
Must be able to complete the following with or without a reasonable accommodation:
- Climb 10-foot ladders to obtain costume boxes placed on shelves. This physical activity will be done occasionally, about 2-3 times per week.
- Lift boxes, weighing less than 50 pounds, containing cloth, accessories, ribbons, hats, etc. This physical activity will be done occasionally, about 2-3 times per week.
- Lift and place onto racks, costumes weighing less than 50 pounds. This physical activity will be done occasionally, about 2-3 times per week.
- Move about in various locations on and off campus as needed to complete day-to-day work
- Effectively communicate on a daily basis

Extra Help employees may only work up to 28 hours per week for all University employment. Employees are only paid for hours worked and do not qualify for most benefits including health insurance and retirement, with Illinois State University. However, Extra Help employees are eligible to participate in the University’s supplemental retirement savings plans (403b). Applicable retirement information is provided at the time of hire. There is no guarantee that working as Extra Help will lead to or secure permanent employment. In addition, extra help employees may only work up to 900 hours total during their employment.
