Job Summary
The mission of Campus Recreation is to encourage the campus community to embrace fun and well-being through movement, challenge, and play. The Assistant Director, Fitness will be responsible for the development, coordination, and administration of all fitness programs and services provided through the Department of Campus Recreation.

Salary Rate / Pay Rate
$60,000 - $67,000 annual
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor's or equivalent degree in Exercise Science or related field.
- Three years of full-time (or part-time equivalent) professional work experience in fitness, experience in a collegiate environment preferred.
- Possession of American Red Cross AED/CPR/BBP/First Aid Instructor Certification or ability to obtain within one year of employment.
- Possession of one (1) certification in personal training OR group fitness as recognized by the National Commission for Certifying Agencies (NCCA). Accepted Personal training certifications include ACE, AFFA, ACSM, CI, NASM, NCCPT, or NSCA. Accepted Group Fitness Certifications include AFAA or ACE. Certification in the other area is required within one year of employment.
- Demonstrated ability to communicate proficiently both verbally and in writing.
- Proven ability to demonstrate group fitness technique.
- Valid driver's license.
Preferred Qualifications
- Master's degree in Exercise Science or related field.
- Demonstrated experience successfully managing a fitness program.
- Possession of both personal training and group fitness certifications as recognized by the National Commission for Certifying Agencies (NCCA). Accepted Personal training certifications include: ACE, AFFA, ACSM, CI, NASM, NCCPT, or NSCA. Accepted Group Fitness Certifications include: AFAA or ACE. Certification in the other area is required within one year of employment.
- Possession of certifications in the fitness specialties planned or currently offered in Campus Recreation. Examples include: yoga, Zumba, cycling, Insanity and aquatic fitness.
- Possession of American Red Cross AED/CPR/BBP/First Aid Instructor Certification.
- Thorough understanding of campus recreation with expertise in one or more areas of recreation.
- Demonstrated experience with training and supervision of student employees and/or volunteers.
- Organizational skills in fitness and special event programs.
- Demonstrated computer skills including Microsoft Office 2010 suite or equivalent product.
- Familiarity with inspecting facility for risk management and maintenance concerns.
- Familiarity with a broad range of fitness equipment and the ability to maintain equipment inventory including procurement and lifecycle rotation plans.
- Familiarity and/or comfort with Fusion (or equivalent member management software).
Work Hours
Core Hours: 8:00am-4:30pm Monday through Friday
Functional Expectations
Must be able to complete the following with or without a reasonable accommodation:
- Effectively communicate on a daily basis.
- Ability to perform group fitness instruction and training.
- Ability to lift up to 50 pounds.
- Ability to repeatedly and independently lift 10 lbs. and push/pull 40 lbs.
- Ability to be on one's feet for long periods of time walking or standing in place on occasion.
- Remain at a workstation for extended periods.

The Civil Service examination for this classification is based on your application materials and responses to the supplemental questions. No participation other than submission of applicant materials is required from applicants that qualify to take the exam. If you meet the minimum required qualifications for this position, you will receive a score calculated based on your education and experience, and your name will be placed on the active employment register by exam score. After the application deadline, the names within the top three scores will be referred to the department for interview. The active register for this classification will be voided when the position is filled.
